Lhong 1919 is an excellent tour option for those interested in the wider history of Bangkok and also those looking for some upmarket shopping and dining. Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya river, Lhong 1919 Bangkok is a 19th century Chinese mansion that has been fully restored and mixes heritage and shopping in a modern style not often seen in Bangkok. Lhong 1919 is often listed as one of the ‘hippest’ new places to visit in the city.
The buildings are built primarily from teak with brick and plaster and the beautiful open courtyard is designed according to the feng shui belief of the interconnectivity between heaven and earth. San Xing court (the middle plaza) of Lhong 1919 has been used as a venue for corporate functions, concerts and movie sets, such is the authenticity and attention to detail paid to the renovation of Lhong 1919.
Now a beautifully restored Chinese merchant house and shrine (complete with traditional murals and adornments), Lhong 1919 is the place where countless Chinese diasporas first set foot in the old Kingdom of Siam. Mazu is the goddess of the sea and protects seafarers and fisherfolk. The three wooden figures of Mazu represent different stages of her manifestation. Mazu Shrine is at the heart of Lhong 1919 and has been there since its founding and remains a feature of Lhong 1919 today.
The line-up of top brands and stores ensures that Lhong 1919 is a hip and upscale shopping experience not unlike those in Europe, America and Australia. Zettino sells men’s leather goods while Hummingbird sells beautifully decorated plants. Studio showcases Chinese design-inflected furniture.
Four restaurants operate daily catering to every taste and occasion. Wharf 41 is a riverside restaurant billed as ‘intense Thai tastes in a Chinese atmosphere’, dishes worth trying here are the stuffed lotus petal and the tangerine and honey yuzu drink. Nai Harng is an upmarket ‘street food’ eatery, try the Nai Harng Fried Rice and the River Shrimp Baked in Agar Noodles. For dessert, head to Plearnwan Panich for a lactose-free Dark Iced Sesame Tofu Coffee.
The river flyer hop on/hop off boat trip stops here making it easy to get to Lhong 1919 as part of a longer tour of the attractions along the Chao Phraya River.
Centrally located on the banks of the Chao Phraya river, Lhong 1919 is situated at 248 Chiang Mai Rd. Lhong 1919 is open from 8am to 8pm daily.
